This is a great tool that has a multitude of uses. As the demand for the Petersen hoe made several decades ago by Gippsland blacksmith Peter Petersen was still strong I started forging this tool from a very humble forge using recycled car springs and Ti Tree, also known as Bush Hickory for handles.

Its long sculpted blade, strong handle socket and robust construction all forged from one piece of carbon steel afford deep soil penetration for deep rooted weeds. Fitted with a premium Spotted Gum handle 1050mm long it is ready for a lifetime of service.
Tool weight 2.5kg inc.handle.
Standard Petersen Hoe
This hoe is 500 grams lighter than the full size hoe and a bit shorter in blade length.good choice for every day chipping of surface weeds and suitable for carrying on a quad or ag bike. Also very handy in the garden and forged from one piece of carbon steel for a long life.
Tool weight is 2kg and 1050mm hardwood handle.
Handy Hoe
This hoe is a smaller scaled down version of the larger hoes with a narrower and shorter blade and 900mm hardwood handle. Handy for smaller weeds or for gardening including raised beds. Designed for strength and durability this tool, though small will last for generations.
Tool weight is 1.5kg inc hardwood handle.
The length of the handle on digging or slashing tools is quite a personal subject.
To ensure the effectiveness of these tools the length of the handle will grossly be dictated by your height and strength.A heavy tool head such as our Brush Hook requires a shorter handle so the weight of the tool can be wielded for effective cutting. With a long handle it would require enormous effort to move the tool fast enough to sever even the softest grasses.
We fit a long handle to our Fern Hook which is a lighter tool which can be swung for cutting or reaping placing the user away from sometimes prickly plants such as blackberry or gorse.
Petersen Hoe handle length will be predicted by your height. A person of short stature will need a short handle. A taller person will require longer handle so the falling blade will enter the ground at an effective angle without bending over.
With this in mind the longer handle fitted to your tool may require shortening which is easily done with a saw. I recommend shortening your handle progressively until the hoe feels comfortable to be used continuously.
